Review: Persephone’s The Mountaintop is a rallying cry

Martin Luther King Jr. is meeting his maker.

Persephone Theatre’s The Mountaintop finds the famed civil rights leader on the eve of his assassination, having delivered one of his most admired speeches — from which the play gets its name — and leaving him to wrestle with his legacy in a Memphis motel room.

The drab room, with scuffed walls and a biblical storm raging outside, sets a deceptively modest stage for a spiritual and political reckoning.

King, expertly played by Matthew Kabwe, is at its centre, opposite mysterious motel maid Camae, played by Emerjade Simms in a riveting performance.
