Noël Coward (1899–1973) was a prolific English playwright, composer, director, actor, and singer known for his wit, flamboyance, and sophisticated style. Rising from humble beginnings to become a child actor, he achieved enduring success in the 1920s and 30s with classic comedies of manners such as Private Lives, Hay Fever, and Blithe Spirit. He remains one of the most versatile artists in theatrical history, having also composed hundreds of songs, written screenplays, and worked in intelligence during the Second World War.

Most recently he co-edited a special edition of Performance Research on undercover work with James Harding at the University of Maryland.
