Queermunity Rainbow Neighbours Play Song Lyrics
Each year, as part Pride Month, Persephone Theatre hosts the Annual 48-Hour Queermunity Theatre Race!
During this annual event, teams receive an inspiration package and have just 48 hours to create an original 10-minute play!
The plays performed this year were amazing and included Rainbow Neighbours by The Chokecherries team! As part of their play, they wrote a catchy song called “Modern Ally, Quizzical.”
We have received numerous requests from folks who saw the show if they could have a copy of the lyrics to the song – thank you to The Chokecherries (Felix and Nissan) for sharing these with us, so we can share them with you!
The song is set to the tune of Modern Major General. We encourage you to be a “Modern Ally, Quizzical” and sing it loud and proud in support of all your “rainbow neighbours!” You can find an instrumental version of the tune HERE.
Modern Ally, Quizzical by The Chokecherries
I am the very model of a modern Ally, quizzical,
I know the orientations, the romantical and physical,
I know the queens of RuPaul, and I quote the fights historical,
LGBTQIA, in order categorical;
If you’re an L or you’re a G, you’re surely homosexual,
You can’t sit in a chair right, then you must be a bisexual,
About transgender people, I am teeming with a lot o’ news —
With many cheerful facts I know bout how their lifespans have improved.
The Q is here to represent the queers and those who’re questioning,
The I is for the intersex, who’re beautiful and interesting,
The A’s for ace and aros, who may not like the physical,
I am the very model of a modern Ally, quizzical.
I know our mythic history, like back when Marsha threw a brick,
Much of our science was destroyed by nazis who were being dicks,
We’ve come all of the way from jail and stones to legal marriages,
Unfortunately rights in many places are precarious.
I can tell you all the pronouns, all the neo and traditional,
The hes and shes and zes and theys, and those who don’t use them at all,
Then I can tell you all the names, of genders that I’ve heard before.
And listen to you later when I need to learn a couple more.
Then I can write to government, to protest all the unjust laws,
And tell you every legal battle that we’re fighting, and it’s cause;
In short, in matters gender, sexual, and the romantical,
I am the very model of a modern Ally, quizzical.
In fact, when I know what is meant by “genderqueer pansexual”,
When I can tell at sight a prounoun pin, and then respect ’em all,
When conservatives and right wing politicians, I’m more wary at,
And when I know precisely what is meant by “gender variant,”
When I have learnt what progress has been made in modern surgery,
So people can appear more like the people they have always been,
In short, the world is changing and I’m glad to be part of the team,
But allyship takes work it’s not a title bestowed passively.
To be an Ally, you must be, declared as one by someone else
And think of all of the queermunity, not only of yourself
And I’m told, in matters gender, sexual, and the romantical
I am the very model of a modern Ally, quizzical.
