Press Release – The Adventure of Young Turtle Showcases What Makes Us Unique

Saskatoon, SK – It is challenging to find where you belong when growing up, but The Adventure of Young Turtle aims to help kids be themselves.

The latest show in Persephone Theatre’s Youth Series is the World Premiere of So.Glad Arts’ The Adventure of Young Turtle, written by local creator S.E. Grummett, performing in the Backstage March 8-9, 2025.

The story is about a young turtle on a quest of self-discovery. On their journey, they meet a diversity of sea creatures who teach them lessons about bravery, kindness and the strength of community. Using puppets made entirely of recycled and repurposed materials this new musical offers its young audience an opportunity to reflect on creativity and sustainability as well. Featuring original songs by Rae Spoon and Ruaridh MacDonald, The Adventure of Young Turtle is a charming adventure about finding yourself in a sea of possibilities.

Grummett is a Saskatoon-based theatre artist who uses their art to reflect their life experience. This show is no exception, with Grummett using the journey of the young turtle to reflect challenges they experienced as a young person, and what they have learned growing up, in hopes it can help other young people who may be navigating their own challenges.

“When I was first coming out as trans, I felt really alone. I grew up not really seeing myself in stories as a kid, in any of the books I read, or the movies I watched,” Grummett said. “And so, in my work, I want to make shows I would’ve needed as a kid. I can only imagine how much easier growing up as a weird queer kid in Saskatoon would have been if I’d seen stories like this one and known there were people out there like me.”

The show isn’t just special to Grummett; everyone involved with the show has had experiences where they don’t fit in.

“That’s what’s so special about the team that’s come together to make this show: We all know what it’s like to feel othered, to feel alone, growing up as queer kids in the prairies,” Grummett said. “The incredible queer and trans artists that have lent their voice to this show, I think we all feel how important this is for the next generation.”

The entire team knows what it is like to feel like they don’t belong and want to help children who may be having a hard time fitting in – no matter who they are.

“Every kid feels different from their peers somehow,” they said. “Feeling like you’re on the outside looking in is universal! The Adventure of Young Turtle isn’t about fitting in, it’s about finding what makes you different and letting that part shine the brightest.”
